Hitching: The Power of Thumb

Ever wonder what kind of people pick up hitch hikers????

Yes, they gave me a ride....

Well, 500+ hitch hikes later, on 6 continents, I'm still trying to work that out!!
But I can tell you this - most of them are good!
Most of them won't rape you, murder you, or sell your kidneys and spleen.
(Although, if you have ANY doubt at all DON'T get in the vehicle!)

Most of them have something to teach you.
They generally have been travelers themselves, they always have awesome stories!
Local knowledge tells you facts and legends you'd never hear anywhere else.

Generally people appreciate the company
And they definitely appreciate you when things go wrong!
(As long as you're willing to give a friendly hand)

I've come to realise that hitching may even be my preferred means of transport.
You can go ANYWHERE!
And it's always an adventure!

And the best part is that you never know who or what might pick you up!
I've had rides from the police, from Cambodia's minister of tourism, from diplomats, mums, the guys clearing and refilling ATMs...

This hitch ended up lasting 9 and a half months...
Sadly this guy was full
Some of my best friends I made by hitching.
Many of my favourite memories come from hitching.
I even got my job by hitching.

Hitching is good for you, it's good for the soul, and good for the wallet!

All it takes is a smile and a thumb
Whether you do it alone or in a group, make sure you try it some day.
